Lansing Cyber Academy – Tactical Sec Ops Training

Annual Training Event – Saturday, November 3, 2018

Last year, Lansing ISSA brought in Secure Ideas for our Lansing Cyber Academy (LCA) educational event.  Secure Ideas is an independent security-consulting and penetration testing firm focused on providing organizations with the services and knowledge needed to improve the security posture of their computing and network environment. Course Description

This Tactical Security Operations course will cover the following topics:

  • Distributed network scanning using nmap
  • Using Metasploit to demonstrate vulnerability risk
  • Performing network traffic analysis 
  • Analyzing systems for signs of compromise 
  • Automation using Python 
  • Strategies for planning security operations

The course will include a mixture of lecture and lab work to help students learn about each of the topics through practice. Secure Ideas will provide a virtual machine with open source tools installed and preconfigured for the class. Each student will receive the course materials and virtual machine for later use. Training tools used will include: nmap, Metasploit, Kali Linux, Python, Burp Suite, and the Social Engineering Toolkit.

Event Details

This will be a full day training session from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. Doors will open at 8:00AM, and attendees are welcome to arrive after this time to set up their workspace and network with other information security professionals. Lunch and snacks are included with this training.

Required Materials

All attendees will need to bring their own laptop and power cord (outlets will be provided). Laptops will need 4 to 8 GB of RAM, 50 GB of hard drive space, and virtualization software (VMware workstation, player, or fusion recommended) pre-installed. Please note: A virtual machine will be distributed at the beginning of class and it does not play well with Oracle VirtualBox. There will not be any wireless internet available during the event; all training materials will be provided at the event on USB drives for local installation.
