Welcome Back from Summer with our August Meeting!

Hello everyone!

The Lansing chapter of ISSA is ready to get back into the information security swing of things with our August meeting, welcoming everyone back after our summer break. Please join us on Thursday, August 18th at the MSU Federal Credit Union on the corner of Mt. Hope Road and Farm Lane for a presentation on social engineering by Steven Fox.

This month’s talk: Social Aftermath – Responding to Social Engineering Incidents

Many social engineering talks focus on the exploitation of trust relationship and the resulting compromise of corporate and personal assets. However, what happens after the pwnage is done?
This session opens with the aftermath of a successful social engineering engagement on a major automotive financing company.  Attendees will learn of the methodical analysis of the interactions which led to the compromise of customer information as well as employee and executive network credentials. The case study also illustrates how this organization was able to use the forensic analysis of social interactions to enhance its customer service business processes.  This information was also used to enhance employee engagement in protection information with associated touch-points.  Most importantly, they transformed customer care to frustrate social engineers while enhancing the experience of their customers.

Bio: Steven F. Fox provides security guidance to ensure compliance with federal standards and requirements as a Senior Cybersecurity Officer for the IRS. Fox contributes to multiple working groups, including the IPv6 transition initiative, the Security and Privacy working group, and the Cloud Strategy working group. He brings a cross-disciplinary, international perspective to the practice of information security; combining his experience as a security consultant, an IT auditor and a systems engineer with principles from behavioral and organizational psychology to address security challenges.
