December 2017 Annual Luncheon

Our December 2017 chapter meeting marks the close of our calendar year and our annual member appreciation luncheon. (Everyone is welcome, even non-ISSA members – although we hope you’ll join our chapter officially for another year of information security speakers and events!)

The luncheon will take place on Thursday, December 14th from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Please note the time change. The location will be our usual meeting spot at the MSU FCU on Mt. Hope Road in East Lansing. Our speaker will be Dr. Thomas Holt from MSU, speaking on an aspect of cyberattacks.

Title: Assessing the Potential for Ideologically-Motivated Cyberattacks

Though there is often a heavy focus on economically-motivated hacks and attacks by both nation-state and non-nation-state actors, few consider the potential impact of attacks stemming from ideologically-motivated actors from across the political spectrum.  This presentation will consider the scope of attacks that have been observed by domestic and foreign extremist groups and their potential impact.  The technical competency of these groups will be examined, along with the potential for their attacks to shift and evolve based on engagement with economically-motivated actors and networks.

Thomas J. Holt is a Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. Professor Holt’s research focuses on cybercrime and cyberterror in a domestic and transnational context.  He has published extensively on cybercrime markets and the sale of stolen data, as well as computer hacking and digital piracy.  He also considers the challenge of applying and enforcing laws related to cybercrime in a global context, such as malicious software creation and use.

Attending this meeting earns you 1 CPE.

The meeting doors will be opened at 11:30 AM for sign-in and networking, followed by our speaker’s presentation and Qdoba catered lunch.
